Each month pages on the HSS website are viewed by people in North America and from around the world. For example, in the 30 day period from Mid March 2025 to mid April 2025, there were viewers from 48 of the 50 U.S. states, 9 out of 10 Canadian provinces, and from an additional 54 countries around the world. While many viewers (especially from the U.S. and Canada) are particularly interested in the Breeders/Members Directory Page, the Breeder’s Ads and Cattle for Sale Pages, viewers from around the world visit the HSS website to read articles in the Cattle Viewpoints section, to look up information on famous old Shorthorn bulls, and to find out about the history, qualities, and advantages of Heritage Shorthorns. We encourage all HSS members to periodically confirm the information in their listing on the Breeders/Members Page, and to look at additional pages for articles & information which you might have previously missed.
HSS has paid for ¼ page, full color ads in all 4 quarterly issues of the Livestock Conservancy Newsletter, including in the latest Spring 2025 issue. Their 2025 Annual Directory has now been published, which includes a full page Heritage Shorthorn ad. (A copy of this ad is posted in the March 2025 newsletter.)
Contest Highlighting Longevity and Productivity
These Heritage Shorthorn traits are extremely useful in extending the productive lifespan of cattle and increasing your profits. HSS is sponsoring a contest open to any Shorthorn breeder in Canada and the USA.
“Rose” epitomizes the value of these traits in Shorthorn cattle. She is an 18 year old Heritage-Influenced Shorthorn cow that just had another calf. The contest is to guess the answers to 2 questions: Main question: What is the ”grand total” sum of the birthweights for all of the calves she has had in her lifetime (including a calf born this spring). Second question (in case a tie breaker is needed): What is the total number of calves she has had? As mentioned above, Rose is 18 years old and has personally birthed all of her own calves—only natural birth calves, i.e. no IVF offspring or surrogate moms involved.
The contest is now posted on the HSS website under “New Contest” in the menu. It runs 1 month from May 1st to June 1st, 2025. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third closest answers. Send your answers to the 2 questions to HSS by email (office@heritageshorthorn.org) or mail to HSS (Heritage Shorthorn Society 6515 Kurtz Rd., Dallas, Oregon 97338. Include your name, phone #, email &/or mailing address so we can contact you if you are a winner. The answers and contest winners will be announced June 15th on the HSS website, at the end of an article about “Rose The Cow” which will be posted at that time.
