January 2026 News

A new “Cattle Viewpoints” article about Shorthorn breeders in Argentina has just been posted on the HSS website. It’s titled “Shorthorn Travels in Argentina, Nov. 2025”. Argentine Shorthorn cattle breeders are serious about raising top-notch traditional-style beef Shorthorns which function well under natural conditions. There are many photos in the article, as well as an associated separate photo gallery titled “Photos: Nov. 2025 trip to visit Argentine Shorthorn Breeders”.

Argentine Shorthorns

It’s always enjoyable to have new and different photos in the photo gallery at the top of the HSS Homepage. We would like to have some winter themed Shorthorn pictures from HSS members. We also like to highlight Heritage Shorthorn calves which represent unique genetic combinations of Heritage Shorthorns for a “Calf of the Month”. Since some HSS members do fall calving and others of you will be having calves this coming spring, we’re once again asking for photos. Take your camera or smartphone to the barn or pasture, and send some good photos to the HSS office.

Announcement regarding the future direction of the Heritage Shorthorn Society:

One of our biggest concerns when we started the Heritage Shorthorn Society was to find the right person(s) to give HSS to when we retired. We believe we have found that person in Dr. Jake Bruton. He is totally dedicated to the preservation and expansion of the Heritage Shorthorn breed. His experiences as a Veterinarian specializing in Reproductive Technology, and with managing his own Heritage Shorthorn herd, provide him with a broad background for Heritage Shorthorns. His devotion to the Heritage Shorthorn breed is grounded in both knowledge and experience. The transition to Dr. Bruton’s full ownership of HSS will take place over this coming year with Dr. Bruton assuming total control on January 1, 2027.

Everything related to HSS will be given free to Dr. Bruton. This includes the HSS website, the HSS Registry, the Heritage Shorthorn Certified Beef trademark and website, and all the money that is in the HSS checking accountant when he assumes ownership.

There are no constraints on Dr. Bruton in how he moves forward with HSS. He is free to do whatever he believes is in the best interests of Heritage Shorthorn breeders and HSS. We are permanently bowing out of HSS but will be available to help Dr. Bruton if he desires.

We want to especially acknowledge the many contributions to the HSS website by Dr. Bert Moore. We also want to thank those HSS members who have supported us over the last 8 years by contributing articles, photos, and encouragement.

The concept of Heritage Shorthorns has been developed to the point that the name Heritage Shorthorns is known across the cattle industry worldwide. To achieve this status we have volunteered thousands of hours of our time and donated tens of thousands of our dollars to put Heritage Shorthorns on the cattle map. Income from members has gone only toward maintaining the websites and paying for national/international advertising. The preservation, production, and promotion of Heritage Shorthorns was always our goal. The number of individuals worldwide that are now interested in Heritage Shorthorns is a testament to the success we have had. Until we started the Heritage Shorthorn Society there was no concerted effort by anyone or any organization to save Shorthorns from the clutches of the cross breeding approach that has become the basis of Modern Shorthorns. The result of this lack of foresight was an ongoing loss of pure Shorthorn genetics as Modern Shorthorn breeders dumped rare, pure Shorthorn semen with no thought as to the future of the Shorthorn breed. The value of the preservation of pure Shorthorn genetics is now recognized as imperative, not only for the Shorthorn breed, but for the cattle industry in general.

Hopefully all HSS members will fully support Dr. Jake Bruton as he carries HSS forward and continues to build on what we have started.
